That's what I've always thought, too. I'm not sure.
Anyway, yes, marriage is a religious institution. However, there are two reasons why that's not valid. 1) There are gay priests or whatever the title might be for the religions, so it's not against the religion right there. 2) Marriage can be granted for legal purposes, not religious. People get benefits for being married, so denying it from gays is discrimination.
