And the waters will rise and the dam will burst,
Any day now, any day.
And the first will be last and the last be first,
Any day now, any day.
When a million hands will be untied,
A million doors and windows will be opened wide...

Well, it's finally happened. Despite the death grip that the bible-fucking religious right now holds over our country, Massachusetts has legalized gay marriage, thus becoming the first state to do so. And we managed to do it despite being governed by a Mormon (who, I might add, is seriously pissed off right now). The state's highest court has ruled that it is discrimination for state officials to refuse to hand out marriage licenses to gay couples. Thus, in 6 months, unless Gov. Romney somehow manages to overrule the decision (which isn't very likely), every gay couple in the state will be allowed to get married.

The best part is watching all the right-wing pricks piss and moan about it, because, unless they can come up with some smart way to justify denying marriage licenses to gays that doesn't involve the usual argument that marriage is "a sacred institution between a man and a woman", gay marriage will be legalized in MA, and then they will only be able to stop it by amending the constitution, which is damn near impossible.

Of course, Bush has already vowed to "defend the sanctity of marriage", because, as the War Against Terror has taught us, he is a fucking moron. But he can't really do anything, since only congress can amend the constitution, and that can take up to 6 years, and, assuming that America is not filled with morons, Bush won't still be in office in 6 years.

Ah, Massachusetts. Our state was the first to rebel against the British, we were the first state to give slaves their freedom, and now, we're legalizing gay marriage. We ought to change our motto to: "Massachusetts - Stirring up political shit since the 17th century"
Awesome. Eat it, Christians. >:3

Well...I guess the main reason for that argument being brought up all the time is because that's what it says in the bible. I mean, in order to get married, a person would have to go to some kind of church or another to make it legitimate (or about as far as I know he or she would). So, as I take it, since people can't seem to find anything about marriage between the same sex being okay, in effect, it would simply go against what is normally being taught.

I'm not sure if I gave a very good explanation of why this issue is commonly raised in defence of anti-gay marriage, so the only thing I can think of right now is to parallel it off with is the NAACP practicing discrimination. Kind of countering what was orignally set up, no?
I thought Hawaii was the first state to legalize it?
That's what I've always thought, too. I'm not sure.
Anyway, yes, marriage is a religious institution. However, there are two reasons why that's not valid. 1) There are gay priests or whatever the title might be for the religions, so it's not against the religion right there. 2) Marriage can be granted for legal purposes, not religious. People get benefits for being married, so denying it from gays is discrimination.

That was mean.

milk me!

I approve of this decision. You want to defend the sanctity of marriage? How about making it harder for people to get divorced? Or, how about making it harder for everyone to get married? How about turning your efforts against stupid reality TV shows that basically reduce marriage to a cheap, disposable prize. Gay marriage is not going to destroy western culture or the institution of marriage. Why do so many right-wingers see it as "a threat to their families" that they need to "protect their family" from? Thinkly veild hate speech, if you ask me. Me, I just want everyone to get along. We're investing so much energy in reinforcing the differences between gays and straights, Americans and non-Americans, patriotic and "unpatriotic" citizens, Republicans and Democrats, etc. No one wants to work together anymore, and that just bothers me.

So they have 6 months to appeal this decision, or something? And if the courts don't reopen the case, it's a done deal?

Are you sure that's a smart bet to make?

Still, I'm going to do what I can over the next year to try to make sure you're right.

Well, that's great. Here in Canada, our departing PM, Jean Cretien (Which, ironically means "Christian" in Englsih) decided to do something to be remebered by before he retires and thought: "Hey! Gay marriage!"
So, as of last summer, that's legal in Canada.
Ah yes, other countries has legalized gay marriages, and yet, the world still continues to revolve around it's axis all the same without taking a moment's notice of the difference just made.
