The cats my family owned never where too affected by catnitp... either that or we never got the "good stuff."

It's genetic, actually. Some cats aren't genetically coded to respond to catnip and get all spazzy like others. ALL cats, however, do reap the same benefits like fewer furballs (earing) and killing fleas (rolling around in).
