A famous close call:
On April 14th, 1865, Abraham Lincoln invited General Grant and his wife, Julia, to accompany him and Mrs. Lincoln to Ford's Theater. The Grants Declined. That night, of course, Lincoln was assassinated. Had the assassination gone perfectly by John Wilkes Booth, both a current and a future president would've been killed that night.
But why didn't they go? Because Julia Grant HATED Mary Lincoln after being snubbed by her multiple times in their own home tour, and wouldn't dare spend another night with her! They gave the Lincoln's one of the limpest of excuses- \"they couldn't go because of the children.\"
