Ya, i got paid at 6.00$ CDN/hour at my last job too, which everyone knows up here is illegal, except for where I worked that is. My stingy bosses found a way to legally underpay me, under a "first-time worker's" law (I'm 16, and didn't have an official job before this).
My choice was to either get paid 6.00/hour or not even get paid at all for three weeks of work (about 30 hours), then get paid 8.00$ an hour.
I chose #1, knowing they wouldn't be forced to pay me 8.00$/hour until I logged at least 500 hours there (a full summer of work, which would have stolen about 1000.00$ from me!) But fortunately, they said that my work would've completely filled up my 30 hours of work experience, which I need to graduate, but that was also illegally said. They had absolutely no right of saying this could be done, and never even talked this out with my W.E consultant (who's an awesome teacher that didn't deserve to get caught up in this). This never was settled out! I quit my job and luckily managed to find another one because my brother quit and put in a good word for me. I quit with 0 hours of work experience logged and a paycheck not worth the paper it was printed on. :P
