Actually, South Park has been using "real" topics for at least the last 50 episodes. Parker and Stone might not admit it, but they're actually copying a formula that was perfected by The Simpsons. The first few seasons were funny while being centered around the characters and the plot only (and catchphrases), but once the name was made, it was necessary to go into the business of social commentary in order to get some staying power. This is how South Park will build its legacy. For instance, the kindergarten election episode got shown on MSNBC.
