I would say, go ahead and ask her out. If he actually gave her his phone number, why did he have to mention it...just to keep you away? If he was a man about it, he wouldn't have mentioned it, at all. If your going to be working with him, don't let him intimidate you...it won't get any better in the future. Like RS3 said, he's probably trying to show you up by making a pre-emptive strike. Call his bluff and make your move. What could she possible say to hurt you...no?
