 I honestly don't know if I want to laugh or scream in horror...what the hell I'll do both.
I think it's actually pretty damn good...
Considering that I'd never be caught dead or in a coma cosplaying unless it's Halloween, (Despite the fact that I'm helping some of my friends find belts for a FFX Lulu costume), I find any of this hilarious.
I'm not commenting on the gender issue, it's cosplay in general that bothers me. I know it's definitely a culture thing since I as an American can't understand the desire for dressing up as an anime character.
Then again I've hated Halloween since fourth grade.
Clowns freak me out, (kind of a cosplay type thing) thank Poltergeist for that.
And I hate parades, (where people tend to cosplay in the US) due to my idiot parents taking me to a Christmas parade where I very nearly got frostbite (among other bad memories of that year) when I was five. So all those reasons probably have something to do with it.
I'm going to cosplay for the first time this fall. It's going to be fun. If you don't think it would be, let me tell you why I disagree.
Have you ever been to an anime con? Cosplayers are everywhere. At first it's wierd, because obviously it's something that you don't see everyday, but after being there an hour or so you get used to it, so the initial shock of it wears off pretty quickly. So while it's easy to laugh at this sort of behavior from the safety of your room of wherever you're surfing the web right now, it's a completely different experience to encounter it firsthand.
And is it really that wierd? I mean, remember: right now you are looking at a website devoted to Digimon porn. It's really, really hard to get any wierder than that. Now that you've gone this far, can you really judge someone that wants to dress up in a costume for a weekend with a bunch of other people of similar interests? At least they're participating in a healthy social activity. You, on the other hand (you being Cyber Stryker, Anus, or anyone else reading this) are probably sitting by yourself eating chips, waiting for IMs, and getting ready to top it off with a your own, personal hentai-appreciation session. I'm not judging, I'm just pointing out the obvious.
And it's fun. It's a hobby for some people, and a means of self-expression. It's an opportunity to escape the confining expectations of ordinary life and just have fun for a day or two. Most people who do this go with a group, and between the costume balls, skit sessions, dance parties, and hotel parties into the night, it seems really fun. Why wouldn't you want to?
I can guess: probably because you don't know anyone else that's doing it. That's how I used to feel. Maybe if I hadn't sort of had the opportunity fall into my lap the way that it did, I probably wouldn't be planning on doing it right now. It's not something you do by yourself, and it's certainly not something you do when you're with people who don't "get it." But when you're at an anime con, everyone "gets it," and nobody's going to judge you, and that's what makes it great. Sure, people take pictures, but it's not like those are going to get back to kids at school or people at work, so don't worry!
Anyway, I just find it kind of strange that people here look down their noses at cosplayers, like they're the freaks. The people I'm going with are some of the nicest, funniest, and most well-adjusted people I know. Myself, on the other hand, that's a different story, but you know what I mean.

I do think it's weird except for the ones that are good doing it (some girl cosplayers are hot) then it's cool but those guys in girls clothes or stuff like that is just bad (no one wants to see a man-faye or a 300lb salior moon guy)
