Actually, Lukaschenko is the German spelling... In English it's Lukashenko. My bad. :P

Anyway, Aleksander Grigorjevich Lukaschenko is the so-called president of Belarus. He is also often refered to as Europe's last dictator. He started his political career in what was then the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. A die-heard communist, he was the only deputy of the Belarusian parliament who voted against ratification of the December 1991 agreement that dissolved the Soviet Union. Ironically, he became chairman of the Belarusian parlament's anti-corruption-committee. In 1994, he became president of Belarus in a surprise victory.

Now comes what I meant by "the Lukashenko way": Very recently, a popular vote changed the law so he may serve an unlimited number of terms as president. Official statistics say 70% of the population voted for the change, but independent sources say that less than 50% of the population even voted. Also, there were reports of voters receiving ballots that were already filled out. It's obvious fraud, but it worked -- now he can be president for as long as he pleases.

Actually, they already are pushing for the changing of presidential rules. Apparently, some people are trying to remove that rule where you must be born in the U.S. to be president, hoping that maybe Arnie might give it a go.
