Though I study Japanese, it's a bit of a niche language...
Latin has a certain aesthetic to it which I happen to like, and in fact, I chose it as the language of first contact between "modern" humans and Adin (see The Flame of Youth in the Original Fiction forum). I did some thinking through their history, and concluded that it's the language they would be most likely to recall from before they departed Earth, so I felt it a suitable choice that they might still have some latin books (both teaching the language and teaching in it), and some latin influences.
If I had to choose one or the other to study for my future, it would be Japanese. But for fun, it's Latin. Just the way I am.
