NYC gets first all-gay high school
Posted by: milk me! - 07-29-2003, 01:48 PM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (8)

http://www.cnn.com/2003/EDUCATION/07/28/...index.html

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City is creating the nation's first public high school for gays, bisexuals and transgender students.

The Harvey Milk High School will enroll about 100 students and open in a newly renovated building in the fall. It is named after San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor, who was assassinated in 1978.

"I think everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. "It lets them get an education without having to worry."

The school is an expansion of a two-classroom public school program that began in 1984. A gay-rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, has managed and financed the program since its inception.

The new school's principal, William Salzman, said the school will be academically challenging and will follow mandatory English and math programs. It also will specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long criticized the creation of the school.

"Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong," Long said. "There's no reason these children should be treated separately."

The Hetrick-Martin Institute's Web site says the school will give its students "an opportunity to obtain a secondary education in a safe and supportive environment. ... We believe that success requires the ability to respect and value the diverse human community."

-------------------

What'd ya think? I'm for it. Kids can't concentrate on their studies when they have to endure shit from other students and other teachers every day. It's not segregation, since nobody will have to go to that school unless they want to. It's a good option for teens to have, IMHO.

  Meeting other Digimon fans

Is it even possible anymore? I'm not talking about younger kids (though if there are any here...no offense, I'd love to meet you but there are a lot of adults out there that might have a problem with that) but people my age, our age, you know what I mean. 16-30 year olds. Yeah, I know I'm pushing it with the 30 year old limit but I'm 24 and I don't want to cut it off at 25. Whatever. I just want to meet someone with my interests.

Do people go to anime cons alone? Is this a good way to meet people? I mean, most people go in groups, or at least that's what it seems like to me, judging from people's blogs and message board conversations. Either that or they meet people there that they already know. Problem is I don't know anyone. Anyone have any advice?

Whatever. I'm in northern Illinois. If there's anyone else here that's in my neck of the woods give me a holler. I'm lonely and bored. We'll watch some anime and play DDR or some other videogames or go for a walk or just sit around bored together. I don't care. You pick.

For those whose into the Batman Comic Books

Those who are not into the Batman comics will probably not know what the hell this is about. In the comic world, this is a very big deal.

Here's a leaked page of who Hush is from the conclusion of the Hush Saga in Batman #619; coming in September.

The anime that replaced Digimon in Japan. *sniff*

This show has taken over Digimon's timeslot. The show is called, Konjiki no Gash Bell.

http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/GB/

I've finished watching the 1st. episode (out of curiousity). The best way to describe the show is that it's similar to Digimon...except the Human's partners are Demon Children.

The source of the Children's Powers come from their books that their owners read out loud.

The show itself was pretty decent (close-up penis shots early on). I'm gonna D/L more eps. to see what happens next. Tthis show was done by Toei.

I saw this kind of thread on another MB, basically just post cool, funny, ugly, stupid pictures!

Even though the Spider-man Movie was great, do you think iut would have been any better if they had this Osbourn as the villian.

  What is your "fantasy life."
Posted by: Angeteen - 07-24-2003, 01:38 PM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (13)

I've been doing some thinking about the "Glass Menagerie." For those of us who have read it, you will know that the main character, Tom, had a sister who was sort of absorbed into her glass collection of animals because she just could not handle even the slightest issues of being social with others (which is one way to explain her shyness).

After reading something about her "fantasy life," I suddenly realized that they are a lot of people who does the same thing she does, that is they somewhat exist in a world that their mind has created for them. One such of my "fantasy life" is mainly dirvited from a seven year span that mainly consumes 2nd through 9th grade.

From 2nd to 9th, I was constantly picked on by just about EVERYBODY, even if all I was doing was trying to finish an assigment the teacher gave me to do. I had few friends, school was nothing more than a chore even without all the work you had to do, so in short, I was just plain miserable. The only place I could turn to for relief was my family, and also a couple of teachers.

So, thanks to what has happened, my perspective on life is somewhat darker than others. I view life as nothing more than something that is a complete waste of time, and even if for a brief amount of time you should attain a status that will put you at the top of the world, it will all be taken away by death. So, basically, all that's left to do is just bide one's time until the day of his departure arrives. THIS, in a way, is my fantasy life. While it may seem dark, they're is also a flip side to it.

I guess the flip side would mainly what accounts for my "morbid" sense of humor. I actually try to find humor in death. I guess that's where I come up with such quotes such as "the best thing about life is that if you don't like it, you can always leave. That said, if anyone needs me, I'll be on top of the roof."

This is of course all said in jest, hardly any real truth put into it, but still, all the same, I am able to put together a vision of life so as to resemble something that is so sad because it is futile at it's best, and yet, to be so funny at the same time because it's futility is also the source of it's comical aspects.

So, in short, my "fantasy life" is somewhat of a morbid/comical existence.

So, now that I've relayed my life's fantasy, what is yours? Good, bad, we all have some sort of fantasy to live in.

Music these days is just BAD
Posted by: MATTHEWDMETCALF - 05-26-2003, 02:52 PM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (55)

Remember back in the day when music used to be good? Well, now you can barely find anything good to listen to these days. I pity this generation of people who think that their music is the best ever. Rap hasn't been good since the 80s. Now it's about robbing banks, "smakin' my bitches", and life in the "ghetto". (The man's 22 living in a mansion and he lived in the ghetto? Think not) And the only rock that you could find now is wuss rock and punk rock. And the punk rock isn't all that great. Punk was best in he 80s in the time of Slayer and Ozzy Osborne. (But who could compete against "Bark At The Moon"?) Rock alone is just crappy now. A song like "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister would have been considered the god of all rock songs compared to the crap now. Remember the time of AC/DC and Iron Maiden? Well, times have changed for the worst....
