Biological Immortality - Lost - 04-29-2010

Did you know it actually exists in nature? A species of jellyfish known as the immortal jellyfish is known be capable of reverting to a polyp form after reaching sexual maturity through a cell development process called transdifferentiation, and theoretically, it can repeat this cycle infinitely. This would allow the jellyfish to have biological immortality, since this process reverses the jellyfish's life cycle.

What's even more psychotic is that this jellyfish might be THE reason why jellyfish populations in general have begun to spike in recent years worldwide, and there is simply not enough other natural means to limit the population (e.g. disease, predation).

Does this mean we get to hunt the jellyfish now?

RE: Biological Immortality - Lost - 04-29-2010

There is only one way.

We'll have Hanar soon, Mike.

Sadly that way is blocked by a tripod. how aggravating.

RE: Biological Immortality - Bee - 04-29-2010

More importantly, how do we exploit these immortal jellyfish?

RPJ - Rocket propelled jellyfish

It will be the end of war or perhaps even of makind.

The only way you could propel jellyfish is if you discharged them through a high pressure water cannon onto the enemy. It would cause really bad stinging and burning like you would not believe.

The Jellyfish aren't completely immortal. They just don't die from cellular degeneration, or "old age". You can squish/slash/beach/space/incinerate the jellyfish and they can still die.
