I'm not a fan of script conventions. It cuts out narrative, which is what I rely quite heavily on. A prose writer should not cut out the voice of The Narrator. The Narrator can be a hugely funny, interesting, or stylish thing in a story. I think that the way The Narrator is written is a reflection on the author, and on the style.
