I going to college right now and I'm taking a computer class over the internet. The problem is that the program required for the class won't work on my computer because I need Win XP or 2000. Well, both of those programs cost a bundle and I want to make sure they'll work. The only information I'm missing is my internet's stats. Do any of you know how I can check what type of internet I have (I need to know the speed and what type it is, i.e. 5.0)?
Do you mean at your college or your realitive speed from your compy? and if you need Windows XP just go to free-downloads.com or another freedownloading site, ( I prefer that one to most.) but make sure that you save everything you need to before changing it, ok?

Usually to run XP
you need about 512MB of RAM
Have the monitor capability of 256 colors
and a faster then 700MHz, processor

other then that, unless someone gets the play by play, then thats for the basics as of now....

The internet is pretty easy all you need to go to is your network connection, that will tell you what the college has, its most likely a T1 or a T3, so you should be fine with the programs, as for your internal system layout, go to computer>right click>properties>device manager>Internet and Network connections (i think it was that.)> click properties....It should give you the info there...

I followed that up to device manager and I don't see Internet and Network connections.
Sorry about that, check in either one of the following....

the tabs

Modems..
Network adapters...

sorry I was talking about an old data base trick...

if this method doesnt work, at the beginning of the boot there should be a "F2" or something key you press to go into computer diagnostic mode, I dont know your compy so its very difficult to go through with it but I think you can find out what modem you have from there as well....

I hope this helps...
Well, you could ask the IT personell... o.O;

Although, when you said "i.e. 5.0", I assume you ment Web Browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

To find out the software version, just open the program, go Help > About.

To get to know your connection, there are various speed-tests out there that should tell you current In/out and ISP. Although, I'd guess you have AOL since its cheap and crappy...

I'm only saying this once more; I am very opposed to pirating. Please don't mention it again.

well the site that gabu put there doesn't exist ... and usually freedownloading sites have how do you say trial programs it isn't necesarly related to piracy.

just wanted to say that XP works fine with less RAM than that, my compy only has 128MB of RAM and came with XP in it, so 128Mb or higher RAM is fine.
