I don't know if it's the exact same situation, but i did what Zepher said to an old friend about three years ago, and it worked really well. but now he's gone a little downhill, and our friendship will never come back. so in the end it depends what you want more i guess: a secondhand friendship or one less "disturbance" around you to worry about.
friendship is so fragile- specially if it ends in death. you never seem to get over the loss of a good friend.
