I was informed by my advisor that ME 217 would make me shop qualified, and I really don't think it's fair to change the rules all of a sudden, especially since I only signed up for ME 217 under the premise that I would then not have to do the extra hours of shop training for no credit. I suppose it's fair to not allow me in the shop while I take the course concurrently, but after I pass it, for the second semester, I ought to be considered qualified. I also took shop class in junior high, and I worked in a hardware store for two years, though I suppose that it's not quite the same. The point is, just like with the graduation requirements, it's not fair to make these sorts of changes when there was already contrary information circulated. Just so you understand my bind, I had no desire to take metal cutting, and I only signed up to avoid having to put in this extra creditless time. I also heard that the forty hour sessions were quite unpleasant. I'm pretty sure everyone else who's taking 217 is taking it for the same reason. I think the best solution would be to improve 217 to include more safety stuff, if it really seems to be a concern, rather than pissing off every student who signed up for it. If necessary, the class time for 217 could be extended. It can be thought of as analogous to social security; this system needs to be amended, but not destroyed. Also, while I'm sure you can vouch for the shop people, I didn't hear any of the students say that they weren't trained safely enough, just that they weren't taught enough about how to use the power tools effectively.

So... You don't want to take training for shop?
No, but I don't have a choice. I have to take the Summer session, because the class no longer qualifies students. On the plus side, now I was able to drop the class.
Well that's good then. So what class are you taking instead?
A couple of English classes for my minor.
