milk me!

I've been keeping an eye out for this in the used bins for the last few years, if only because Len's version of "Kids In America" is one of the best pure pop songs I've ever heard. But have you ever really stopped to think about this album, and just how wierd it is?

The disc itself is kind of a snapshot of what radio was like in the late '90s, so it's kind of wierd now to hear so many styles that were getting radio play just a few years ago that have all but disappeared from the airwaves today. You've got the figurehead band of the skapunk revival, Might Mighty Bosstones, with their big hit "The Impression That I Get." Then you have Fatboy Slim's "Rockafeller Skank," a ridiculously catchy and addictive big beat track that somehow also became a radio hit, even with the part near the end where everything gets chopped up and sssssstttttttrrrrrreeeeeettttttcccccchhhhhheeeeeddddd oooooouuuuuuuuuuuttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt, which completely blew my mind the first time I heard it. I never liked Barenaked Ladies, but with the inclusion of "One Week" and Smash Mouth's "All Star" (how many movies has this been in?), it's a wonder this soundtrack didn't sell a lot more than it did. Then again, it's not exactly clear just what the hell Less Than Jake or Smash Mouth have to do with Digimon. I wonder if there are people in these bands who still haven't seen this movie, or if some of them still don't even know that it exists and that they were actually involved in it.

I can remember sitting alone in the theater (yeah, I went alone, and it was towards the end of the second week it was out so it was pretty much gone after the day I saw it) and just being completely awestruck with confusion while watching the scene where little Tai is chasing Koromon around his room after (or was it right before?) it took a shit on the floor. Here you have a Japanese movie that's being wrecklessly re-edited together with two other movies, then being dubbed into English, and then having a Fatboy Slim song thrown on top of it. I couldn't figure out if I was watching a triumph of postmodern art or a total embarassing mess. I'm still not sure what to think of it.

Actually, 2000, but who's counting? The music scene changes fast, and if you look at what's pop now, clearly things haven't changed for the better. Fortunately, alternative rock is still good, if you can manage to find an alternative station. The big soundtrack of this year, the one that's supposed to reflect the style for 2004, is Spider-Man 2. I bought my copy. It's not bad, but it's not good. The bands all sound the same, all pop-punk. Pop-punk is okay in small quantities, but you can't fill an entire soundtrack with it. The guest appearance from Brian May was kind of nice, reminded me of my favorite soundtrack, M:I-2. I was never really a fan of ska, and it wouldn't work for a whole soundtrack, but having a few ska songs on the Digimon soundtrack worked for it, in my opinion.

I bought my copy at Best Buy a few months ago. Trust me, it's sold here. If you can't find it in stores, try Amazon or ebay. Actually, I'll give you a link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...eName=WDVW
