And people say Steven Hawkins is the smartest man ever to exist! Shows how overrated science is in out society

Okay, it's Stephen Hawking, and I didn't give you permission to use my fact as fuel for your agenda. His argument was sound; black holes don't obey the laws of physics, so they shouldn't have existed. As an engineering student, I take exception to hearing that science is overrated in society.
He doesn't need your permission to use what you said. That's not how debates work / how debates have worked since the dawn of mankind.

Science may be overrated, but then again, religion and all other alternatives are even more overrated, so science is probably your best bet in the long run.
great lotr reference urban and AV

No, it was a quote from my favorite among the Seattle grunge bands, Soundgarden, but I made another topic that used a quote from "Heart-Shaped Box".
slightly off-topic, it's my personal theory that black holes aren't what they seem to be. i think it to be entirely possible that they don't actually pull matter into them, but rather distort energies and magnetic fields.

see, if black holes actually did have such a massive gravitational pull, they would not only pull things into them from a far greater distance than what it appears that they do, but their gravitational field would grow at an exponential rate due the emense volume of matter that would be continuosly pulled into the mass. so it's theoretically impossible that there could be such a massively powerful celestial body without causeing everything around it to be pulled into it at a dramatically fast and constantly increasing rate; which means the black hole at the center of our galaxy would have long ago enveloped the milky way in it's entirety, judging by it's estimated age.

personally, it goes against everything i stand for to shield the "innocent" from being exposed to anything. i believe that people should learn to make informed choices from a young age. if you teach children about things when they're younger, they'll grow up with a better understanding of things and most likely cease the unhealthy compulsive behaviors in which they partake far too often. i believe in an ethical society in which people are well informed and well-equiped to deal with things however they feel fit, whether than being taught the moral way of doing things.

I am actually a victim here. My father has always tried to protect me from the outside world and shelter me, but in the end, he ended up failing. While it is true that I don't know half as much as I'd like to, I still know enough to fit in with those who were never sheltered at all.

For my 15th birthday, I got an Emiem CD. After my friends left, my father bitched at me about having friends who support Emiem (because my father hates people who speak thier mind when they complain and bitch about life's issues. OMG, what a hipocrite) My father took the CD and cracked it over his knee saying "My son will NOT be subjected to this corruption".

That's only one of the thousands of things he's done to me in the past... =P

I think that more gay couples is a good thing because the world will become overpopulated one day and we need to prevent that. To me, it seems like banning gay marrage is a downward spiral. First, gay people can't marry, then the world overpopulates, then the controlling government sterilizes people and then we have another issue with preventing the weaker humans from having kids and the stronger and smarter ones get to have the rights.

Actually, that's not a bad idea... for you darwinists out there (and I'm not critisizing you either) It will be an unnatural selection. We won't have to worry about overpopulation in our life time. But I think if we don't draw the line somewhere, one day it may be too late.

And what happens to things that get affected by black holes? We have yet to find out.

That's an interesting theory, and you could be right, but I think the reason why black holes don't keep growing is because they're surrounded by the vacuum of space. They already pulled in all the matter that they could, and there's nothing left in range for them to pull. By "in range", I mean the gravitational radius, which is proportional to the black hole's gravitational pull. Even with an infinite amount of time, everything wouldn't necessarily get pulled into the center of the galaxy, because the gravity is only enough to create an orbital effect similar to the one for our solar system...or hold us in place. Does the galaxy spin? I'm not really sure.
first of all, yes, the galazy does rotate.

whlie that would be a truthful statement, it fails to compensate for the additional mass gained by the assimilation of matter unto the black hole. with this additional material, the gravitational field grows and can therebye pull at thigns from a greater distance which is then absorbed into the mass, again increasing the gravitational field; thus the theory of exponential growth. and also even space is not a total vacuum, or so i've read.
Gentlemen, there is only one thing to do, build a ridiculusly expensive peice of equipment which will measure the G-forces being pulled on it by the black-hole, and throw it in the black hole. It will probably be lost, and the trillions of dollars will be all wasted, but if we make it seem like we got some invaluable data from it...no one will question it in fear of looking ignorant...It's perfect!
