in a elementary school where I live they tried (I repeat tried) to have a rule where kids couldn't talk at all or they get sent to the office.
it lasted a week before they had a pta meeting to stop it
you know if they tried the crap in a high school it'd last a day tops!
you can't get kids to shut up exspecally little kids so why did they think it'd work

Inability to talk is undermining what the school's supposed to be about. If they're just getting preached to, it extremely hurts the learning process by being unable to ask questions or consult with friends about the problems. School is also around so that children learn how to associate with each other. The only reason I can see for them to do it is so that they don't talk bad to the teacher, which is already something bad in the first place (and the parents need to know about it). If they do it too much, or the parents don't care, the school doesn't have to keep the kids.
I've heard of this before. Other schools have tried the same thing, mostly because the teachers' wanted some peace and quiet.
If those idiots didn't want to put up with chattering kids, then they shouldn't have decided on elementary school teaching as a profession. I hate blabby kids as much as the next person, but that place is their environment more so than the teachers', and should have some reasonable limits.
I beleive SNL once did a Weekend Update sketch on something like that when a school principle banned talking at lunch hour unless the kids were discussing litterature.

This reminds me of a funny story. In my freshman year of high school I started with a fresh-out-of-graduate-school English teacher. She complained to the principal because I was talking without raising my hand, and because my comments weren't P.C.. When I went to the principal's office, he used the argument that none of the other students talked without raising their hands. We both knew that was a lie, so I told him he was full of shit. Yep, those were my exact words. I literally told my principal that he was full of shit. I ended up with a few detentions, and I had to transfer to a different English class. The rookie English teacher ended up dating one of the students, and she was canned by the school.
