I'd say they put it in there because maybe they think that round implies that it's a perfect circle. Maybe what they mean is that it's not round, but just that it's more of a sphere shape.
Well, duh. They just figured this out now?
If I remember correctly, it's generally egged-shaped. I forgot where I read this, but it was probably a reliable source.

It's not round as a circle is, but the Earth is sphericle in shape! The rotation of the Earth causes the equador to bulge, giving it a slightly oval shap rather than the round globe we are used to seeing!

I can understand it being a sphere (seeing as a sphere DOESN'T have to be officially round), but egg-shaped seems a tad odd. I mean wouldn't that mean that the Earth has some EXTREME gravitational fields near the longer parts?
Actually it's more egg shaped. There's a slight bulging to the south of equator.
I know I read that but I can't remember the source and I'm not going to re-read 40+ books I have on Earth (part of astronomy set)
