I'm looking for a free dungeon based game like hack or rogue, only where theres actual characters and not /s or *s attacking me claiming to be snakes or spiders.

Cave Storys a pretty cool side view dungeon crawler if you've not played that before, freeware and pretty decently known. Not sure if its of the sort of game you want to play though, as it somewhat follows Metroid or Castlevanis kinda gameplay. Still pretty awesome though.
