Sulfur's fingers worked the flasks once more. He poured their contents into the gradient bowl in a melody of drizzles, drips, dashes, and dimples; pouring the colours of a rainbow and mixed them black, like coal pitch. Flower nectar stung his nose. Smiling, he snagged a small vial from the top shelf, unlocking the glass latch and letting it thump closed, and poured its guts into the black cocktail. The liquid shuddered. It popped like kindling and turned iridescent green.
Within the small Apothecary Quarters, the dragon bodyguard reached for his arrow quiver. They were tilted against the window sill, along with his Longbow, canvass duffle, and a small tie of plants.
"Another good batch." He murred. He dipped an arrow tip in his brew. Coating until satisfied, Sulfer placed the laced dart on the sill to dry in the late sun. "I have to find the Alchemist who prepares these. She must have paid a fortune for them." He said.
The door opened. Two meek steps and it closed, accompanied with a snigger, the sway of a tail.
"Playing with your toys again Pookum?"
Sulfur rolled his eyes. "I hardly get to play with them Rose, and stop calling me Pookum, someone will hear you."
"Can't a loving female give her husband a loving name?"
He placed ten more arrows on the sill and chuckled. "A light-footed girl should not speak our little secret so publically." Letting another group soak, he turned towards Rose. "What would the Emperor think if his bodyguard was enarmored with one of his servants."
Rose snickered. Sulfur loved it, the way it hissed through her sickled teeth. "Oh fie, you and the Emperor. He's always busy and keeps you cooped up in that chamber of his. Tell you what, give me kisses and I'll see you tonight."
Rose the Food Servant was a nostril shorter than Sulfur. Her scales flashed patterns of greens, deep and light, saturated and transparent, and her white underbelly jiggled every time she laughed. She smiled at him and her blue eyes waited. He rose from his chair and pecked her snout once, twice, and thrice, feeling her breath vent against his nose.
After a moment, Sulfur let go. "Now time to pitter on those light feet, I'm due to watch over them Emperor." He slung his items and requivered the arrows. "Hopefully I can get some hunting in before sundown and snag you a Pheasant or two."
Rose giggled. "How could we eat such a thing when you use all that poison?"
Sulfur growled. He shooed her out the door and closed it behind him. She flitted down the hall towards the kitchens, he to the Emperor's Chamber Hall, where he'd sit for another day...
