I've always maintained that the best bands find a balance between punk and metal, not necessarily grunge (though Soundgarden is awesome), but punky metal or metallic punk bands are my favorites, for the most part. Few of these bands are mainstream.

Look at the nu-metal scene of the 90's. Most of the bands are inactive, or have broken up, with a select few bands prevailing, (eg: Slipknot, Disturbed.)
They still remain because they, as you say, adapted.

Or more, following the current trend.
