He's a doggie digimon, and is actually a subspecies of Gazimon (not that they bear much resemblance, but that's the official description.)

I think when he said he wasn't a dog, he meant that he wasn't a normal dog, as he had been referred to, but a digimon. Doesn't mean he isn't a dog type digimon.

This beast type digimon is thought to be a subspecies of the sharp claw-bearing Gazimon line. He specializes in strike-and-dodge attacks with his agile movement. The gloves on his hands seem to be protecting his claws until they grow. For his certain-kill technique, Rolling Upper, he rolls himself into his enemy's chest, and Double Backhand is unleashed while he spins. He also has Gao Rush, where he moves around agilely, releasing a high-speed barrage of punches.
