DaD - Past and Future (contd. above)
#1
Alright, as you can see, the DaD is back. Sorta. Kinda.

I mailed the Hosting Uberdude, and he informed me that Togashi is truly missing in action. He has apparently been unavailable for quite a while now, and the same seems to apply to his funding.

Thus, the sudden "DaD cannot be reached" issue has been a (very understandable) emergency reaction of the host. The DaD's a major bandwidth hog, and without proper funding, it's a nightmare.

I have asked for the main WWW part of the site to be reactivated (as you can see, my wish has been granted, which I find extremely nice), mostly to get back the boards.

This has two reasons.

1) I want this community to interact, even if the interaction has slowed down a bit for a couple of reasons (my own horrible updating schedule being one of them).

2) I want to know if anybody has constructive ideas. I'm not talking about how to do updates or if we should change the color of the main site to shades of green. I'm talking about the existence of the site.

I don't have exact numbers here right now, but I'll ask the hosting dude for a few rough estimations.

Plan A is to keep this subdomain running. Yes, that means that the ART subdomain would go down, including the art on it. Yes, that sucks royal ass. I'll ask how much this would cost and I'll get back to you.

Plan B is the whole deal. Art, Board, Fics. I'll ask for costs there, too. However, rest assured that that number WILL be higher.

These numbers and the suggestions will determine which way the site goes. I don't intend on switching hosts anytime soon (unless somebody has a ultra-cheap, reliable host that accepts a porn bandwidth monster; and even THEN I'm not sure if I can redirect the domain name, which is apparently still owned by Toga), so let's focus on this host and constructive solutions.

In the meantime, feel free to catch up with fics and art here. The site is on hiatus (even though the fic archive is back up - a pleasant side effect of having the main domain online for now).

I deeply apologize for the troubles of the past and the potential future. However, I hope that we can work something out here. :)

Hmm, this is a real poser. I doubt we'd be able to get enough dough through donations to keep the site running up like it used to be. I know this sounds completely strange and unusual, but did you ever think of starting over? Like starting a new site from scratch? I mean I've noticed that many authors and artists have since retired and haven't contributed anything to the site in years. This makes me believe they lost interest in digimon and want nothing to do with it anymore. We can start a new site where a new generation of people can join and save space on the site since I heard text documents take up very little space.

Or if you want to keep the site where it currently is then why not dump the art section? In my opinion people come to sites like this for stories and not pics. This could also save space in the site's memory and thus lessen the amount to run it. mediaminer and ff.net primarily deal with fanfiction and both seem pretty popular. I also doubt anyone at the DHZ would be willing to help since they pretty much hate everyone here for various reasons so basically we're on our own.

Did you also ever consider cutting down on the quality of the layout of the site? It doesn't have to be all fancy schmancy as long as it hosts the same content. I wish I could think up more ideas but I did a fair share of looking for web hosters and most don't tolerate adult content and even if they did their plans are limited. I.E. Brinkster, Angelfire and Geocities. What about switching over to Ketnar? The DHZ uses that and it seems to be working out fine. Whatever the outcome of this site may be I remain confident digimon lemon writing and hentai in general will stay in people's minds, at least I certainly hope so anyway.

If all the pics were delted and you need some of them i used to have some from 2years ago i believe. id have to go through a bunch of cd's to find them though.. not good at records keeping.

donation dough wise i'm a poor college student and dont have much.. until about the 8th weeks of the upcoming fall semester when i should be getting a check for the balance of my student loans and can then donate probly 50bucks cause i like to donate when i can and have donated a couple smaller amounts in the past.. i can give 5-10 bucks at moment if you need just let us know when you get info back.

i was curious what happened to the site and emailed tog but never got a response .. sorry its getting expensive.. if i had more money i'd give it causei know i used to come here weekly for new pics until it slowed down a bit but check back monthly nowadays

oh found those pics.. its 212mb so id have to do it via instant messanger or something to get it to you or mail it if you need some of the pics if that section opens or not.

just a stories section and the boards is fine by me.. im sure people can post new art to the boards like wwoec does in their boards.

The current plans focus on keeping this site up in some form, so let's keep "new site" ideas back for now. Either way, I wouldn't have the time to start a completely new site from scratch.

Donations might be a way, I dunno yet. Depends on the info I will hopefully get soon.

Dumping the art section would basically be Plan A, but it would make me (and most others) cringe. A lot. Again, depends on the numbers and the other suggestions. I'll try to keep it, but it IS the bandwidth killer (heck, even the main site is a bandwidth killer, but the art one is a monster).

The site layout is actually pretty much optimized, presenting a compromise between "good looks" and "low bandwidth cost". That had been one of the key aspects of the redesign. Add to this that most people will have the two or so images in their cache, the layout doesn't weigh into the calculation.

Ketnar might be an option, but I honestly doubt that they're much cheaper than the current one. Angelfire and Geocities would explode instantly. Keep in mind that Soni's paying quite a bit for the DHZ monthly. I'll idly probe that alley, but for now, I'd like to stay.

EDIT for new replies:

Nothing has been deleted, and I have an offline copy of the site (minus board) on my local computer. The problem isn't that the files are gone, but that hosting them is a bitch ^^;

So if Bill Gates suddenly came over and said "Sure, I made a server for you, just upload!", I could do it instantly. Mr. Gates' absence is the reason for this thread :P

Togashi's absence has caused lots of problems in the past, and this is the last "straw", so to speak. :(

Let's see how things work out. :)

Damn. I wish I could get a PayPal account from somewhere so I could send you guys some cash, but being under 18 and lacking a credit card makes that quite difficult.

In my opinion we should cross-reference the DHZ, see what they have in terms of art, and take down everything here that is also there. That would probably save us some bandwidth... I hope.

At the very least it is my opinion that we NEED to keep these boards up. Gotta have some place where those who aren't assholes can talk amongst themselves without interference.

Stories are good too, though it would be nice if we updated our archives, because the DHZ has old stories (for example by Red Rover) that never quite got here for some reason, despite being nowhere near new.

And whoever made the suggestion about switching to Ketnar or something else, I think if we could get the money it would be a good idea, as it would free us from this reliance on Togashi. We should make some effort to get control of the hosting and domain name to the REAL webmaster, not the one whose email address is no longer valid!

I have some idea that might be insufficient, but here goes:
Lycos/Tripod has a free hosting of 50 megas. You might ask for several free hostings.
(you only need to give it 50 visits to the main page now and then, that can be under construction, that's all)

I have no idea if we can just grab the domain name. I sorta doubt it. I'll look into that issue (and the associated "moving" one) if all else fails and if we get some sort of super-better offer.

Lycos and Tripod would skin us alive. They'd kill the accounts once they notice the extreme bandwidth use. Yes, it IS extreme. Not even to mention the porn aspects... O.o;
