How to Save America
Quote:I thought primordial lust had more to do with it? MAny Catholics use contraception, and if you want to blame anyone, blam China.
No, China has a one child rule, and they enforce it pretty strictly. I blame Catholism. In America, it used to just be the Irish families, but nowadays, the Hispanics are reproducing like crazy, much more than they have a right to be by their income. The original estimate was that the country would be 25% Hispanic by 2050, but I bet it happens sooner than that. Internationally, India is probably the worst at a billion with a dowry. There's similar male focused stuff in China, so when girls are born instead of boys, they aren't always taken.

Why, exactly is Catholicism to blame? Go more in depth. Seems like you're just beating on the Catholic Church for this one.

Catholicism and Christianity in general tell people that when having sex one must not use contraception, one MUST run the risk of a pregnancy, and if a pregnancy occurs, they say, you MUST have the child. It is apparently the Will of God that we screw ourselves into oblivion.

And as to our economics debate, 1. Efficiency and technological progress are not objects unto themselves, but means of making peoples' lives better. 2. Where in hell did you get the idea that I was advocating socialism, the control of the economy by the government?

I knew a catholic in high school, his preist didn't mind the condom thing.
I just want to add in to listen to the catholic song from monty python's meaning of life. So the irish catholics are the ones with so many kids?
(That makes this one cartoon character make sense now.)

In the Capitalist system, they are necessity. They are to increase profit, which in turn makes people's lives better (and not just the owners, supply and demand applies for people as well). Without capitalism, there is no necessity, except for the government to use it to compete, which generally makes people's lives worse.

You were basically advocating a form of non-radical democratic socialism. Socialism does not even necassarily require the public ownership of all things, mostly the ownership of necessities, like in the Scandenavian countries?

It requires government ownership, which I wasn't proposing.

Right. Without capitalism, they aren't necessary. Hence, my point.

So you are a primitivist? And, not only that, but you wish not to make people's lives better?

It's ironic that the Hispanics are the biggest proponents of Catholicism, considering the fact that the Vatican has done everything in its power to preserve the dictatorships found throughout Central and South America.

How so?

Well, for one thing, the Vatican has punished Catholic priests in Guatemala for aiding los indigenos (people belonging to one of the country's 22 different indigenous groups) in their attempts to force the government and los ladinos (upper class, mainly made up of people with mixed Spanish-indigenous blood) off of their land.
