You hit the nail on the head with that statement. People who say that friends shouldn't date should be soundly smacked in the face with a sock full of quarters. Friends make the BEST significant others, because you already know how to hang out with them, and there's no awkward "getting to know you" phase. You already know each other.
Personally, I think it's the ideal setup.
