Efficiency and technological progress are not objects unto themselves, but means of making peoples' lives better.

In the Capitalist system, they are necessity. They are to increase profit, which in turn makes people's lives better (and not just the owners, supply and demand applies for people as well). Without capitalism, there is no necessity, except for the government to use it to compete, which generally makes people's lives worse.

2. Where in hell did you get the idea that I was advocating socialism, the control of the economy by the government?

You were basically advocating a form of non-radical democratic socialism. Socialism does not even necassarily require the public ownership of all things, mostly the ownership of necessities, like in the Scandenavian countries?
