Biggest surprise/dissapointment.

Round Three, FIGHT!

Surprise: Dead Rising (XBOX 360): I really liked this game. I wasn't expecting much since I bought it for real cheap and all, but it's a good game. It's another zombie game by Capcom, but I liked it because of the dark humor throughout and that B-Movie feel to it. Plus, what other game lets you bean zombies over the head with a gumball machine, a large fish, or a Servbot head. Plus, the bosses are hilarious from the chainsaw wielding clown, the crazy gun shop owner and grocer, and an insane cult leader. The only real negative I can think of is when you have to escort survivors. Because of the number of zombies that can be on screen (especially at night), it's not too hard for them to get mobbed. On the plus side, you can at least give them weapons. All in all, a really good game, especially for the price.

Disappointment: Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Genesis): After the awesomeness of Sonic 3 & Knuckles it was going to be a real challenge for Sega to top themselves so what did they do? 3D of course! You may think that Sonic's recent games are bad (I can't verify that), but what really killed Sonic for me was this game.

First of all, in order to achieve a "3D" effect, they gave the game this weird isometric view. Super Mario RPG (SNES) and Solstice (NES) did this too, but they were an RPG and an action puzzler and didn't require high speed so it least wasn't a huge struggle.

Sonic on the other hand is high speed action, but it just doesn't translate well, especially because he doesn't have the homing spin move he has in those later games. It's pretty easy to accidentally jump into spikes or enemies in this game because of the awkward point of view and controls.

Another issue I have is that Tails and Knuckles have been reduced to Special Zone markers. I mean, how the hell do they take you to those bonus zones anyways? If you weren't really going to use them, then why put them in the game?

The music and graphics are okay, but poor controls and gameplay just killed the game. This combined with that shitty Sega CD (Sonic CD is awesome, but the Sega CD sucked otherwise) I owned really killed Sega's image in my head until years later when I started collecting old Genesis carts. Well, plus, the N64 had Super Mario 64 while the Sega Saturn had almost nothing at launch.
