who IS the darkest band out there? - Bee - 01-03-2009

Floating around the older threads here, I saw something that got me wondering.

Who IS the Darkest band out there? The kind of music that you listen to, and say to yourself, "man, these guys are fucked up."

Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie readily come to mind for me. I mean, the Prince Of Darkness bit the head off a freaking bat for fucks sake, and anyone who's listened to House Of 1000 Corpses by Rob Zombie can verify that he aint right in the head.

So, tell me sinners, who is the darkest band in your opinion.

That depends what you mean by dark. If you mean which band is the gothiest and dark-obsessed, I'd say probably AFI. If you mean which band plays the heaviest metal, I don't know, but of the ones I've heard, probably Strapping Young Lad. If you mean which band has the harshest, and therefore, darkest lyrics, that's got to be Bad Religion.

Click any band there. Also, look up black metal or death metal.

What about Pink Floyd? One song: One Of These Days.

"....one of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces..."

Supposedly, the guy went insane shortly after writing that one-lyric song.

I was actually going to offer Pink Floyd on the table. It isn't how loud a band plays, or how dark they project themselves outward (be it leather and spikes, or dark clothing and safety pins). It comes down to the content of the lyrics. And I'm not talking about those who scream about hellfire and death, I'm talking the thoughts of a deranged man.

It's common knowledge that Syd Barrett's mind was slowly dwindling and as it did the contents of the songs he wrote became more obscure. I bring the little known song "Vegetable Man" into the discussion.

This is my opinion though and of course others are free not to share it. But I will leave you with this:

Carry on.

And I must also cite the song, Be Careful With That Axe, Eugene, also by Pink Floyd. I'm sure it's from the same era as One Of These Days, in Pink Floyd's history.

Well if you're look about lyrics, then look up Detroit Metal City.

I wouldn't say he's dark, but Frank Klepacki from Westwood studios made the most awesome songs for the Command and conquer series. On the basis that the music was played during bloody warfare, regardless of it being virtual or real, i'd say he deserves to be classed as dark.

hmmm I would say gwar. In there concerts they are known to drench you in cow blood and then have you swallowed by an alien (fake alien, real blood). And if you can understand the lyrics they can be very...different.
