Birdo was originally a guy, right? Then they turned him into a girl- even becoming yoshi's girlfriend- Hmmm... yeah- Gender confusion rocks!!

Well, sort of. He was originally a guy that preferred being a girl...then I think they edited that out into obscurity.
I don't know about girlfriend with Yoshi, but they were partners on Mario Tennis at least.
Birdo works so much better as a male. oo;
