It has to be, at the largest, 80 by 80 pixels.
And I think either the second to last or last choice on how to upload your avatar to the website works.

To upload an avatar from your machine, which can be no greater than 80*80 pixils in size, by the way, click "browse" next to upload an avatar from your machine. If you're uploading an avatar from a URL, copy and paste the adress in the box reading "upload an avatar from a URL". If you are linking to an avatar off-site, copy and paste the adress into the box below that. There are no avatars in the gallery.
All avatars can not exceed 80*80 pixils. It's a rule (but followed loosely). So long as your avatar is a sencible size that doesn't stretch the browser or takes too long to display, you should be fine.
