Honestly, it seems like an homage to Matt's from Adventure the way it was styled. Technically, the big three characters from Adventure were Tai, Matt, and Sora...so are they shaping the characters to be homages to those three characters you think? The situation is already similiar to Adventure's...kids (or kid in this case) going back to fight menace that has already taken over the Digital World.

Actually, its more like "Koromon in Tokyo", the main character misses several months in the digital world for staying less than a day in the real world, and comes back to find his friends changed and has to help them.

Anime characters don't die or fade away, they get recycled. Just look at Death Note's L and Bleach's Ulquiorra.
