The Body:

Pregnancy:
The first true signs of pregnancy do not occur until sex weeks after
conception.
Many women experience vaginal bleeding after the fertilized egg embeds
itself into the uterine wall, but that is almost always mistaken for a
period and not considered evidence.
At around six weeks a woman's body first truly begins to change. The
chemical changes are what pregnancy tests use to determine if a woman is
with child.
'Morning sickness' refers to outward reactions a woman has from
pregnancy, but most symptoms a woman would experience, including nausea,
plagues her throughout the day, not just in the morning. Typically a
woman may experience any or all of these pregnancy symptoms: nausea,
mood swings, swelling and tenderness of the breasts, food cravings, weak
bladder, excessive farting, constant state of semi-arousal, feeling
lethargic, forgetfulness, and lack of period. Which symptoms and their
duration a woman experiences varies from woman to woman, but are usually
the same symptoms the woman's mother experienced. Some of these
symptoms, like nausea and mood swings, last for two to three months, but
may only last weeks or could persist throughout pregnancy. While the
lack of a period is viewed as a 'certain sign of pregnancy,' women
sometimes miss periods for a couples months naturally and some women
still experience periods during pregnancy.
Weight gain rarely occurs before the forth month. Actually, a woman is
more likely to loose weight during the second and third month due to
nausea and increased trips to the bathroom.
Pregnancy typically lasts forty weeks but can be shorter or longer by
up to several weeks. Someone who is pregnant with twins can expect to
give birth two weeks earlier than if she only had one baby.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases / STD:
Catching a STD is often from sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, AND
oral). These diseases usually can also be transmitted through blood
transfusions, having a bloody object puncture the skin (shared,
unsterilized drug needles), and through to an infant from the mother
while she's giving birth.
AIDS, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome / HIV, Human Immunodeficiency
Virus - A virus which attacks the CD4+ T-cell, a cell in the blood that
fights infections and diseases. AIDS is considered fatal though you
don't die from the HIV virus itself, but an illness the person's immune
system would've been able to fight off if not infected. There is no
known cure. This disease can also be transmitted by drinking an infected
woman's breast milk.
Chlamydia - A curable bacterial infection that often goes untreated due
to lack of obvious symptoms in early stages and is common among teenage
girls. If this bacteria goes untreated, it can cause swelling,
discoloration and pain of sexual organs, mucus secretions from sexual
organs, forms of pneumonia, infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and
tubal pregnancy. A baby born to an infected mother may experience
pneumonia and neonatal conjunctivitis.
Gonorrhea Gonococcal Infection / Clap / Drip - A treatable bacterial
infection characterized by the secretion of puss from the penis, vagina,
or anus. It also causes pain, swelling and skin lesions to the penis,
vagina and/or anus, potential infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease
and tubal pregnancy in women.
Hepatitis A - A very infectious virus that infects the liver and can be
transmitted by various sexual acts, especially oral pleasuring of the
anus. Can be transmitted during prolonged casual contact with someone
infected. There is a vaccine to prevent catching the virus. If infected,
the virus will naturally go away. Causes aches and pains, general
feeling of illness, dark urine, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, nausea,
jaundice, loss of appetite, and pale feces.
Hepatitis B - A virus that attacks and can destroy the liver. The virus
can be transmitted through fecal matter, including urine, from eating
raw shellfish, and even from kissing. There is a vaccine to prevent the
virus, but no medical treatment for the virus itself. Most people
infected will develop an immunity in six months, but some people carry
the disease for all their life.
Herpes - A viral infection that can cause blisters to appear around the
mouth and/or genitals. In Genital Herpes, pain and burning sensations
also occur. The virus can generate flu like symptoms and increase risk
of gaining another sexually transmitted disease. The virus is fatal for
an infant that is infected through vaginal birth. The virus has many
forms of usable treatment.
Syphilis - A severe bacterial infection that can take years to
manifest, and can lead to blindness, insanity and death. It creates
lesions that start as a red rash covering the skin, but it can continue
to cause damage to the eyes, heart, spine and brain. The virus can be
treated with penicillin.

Digimon Genders:
Official word from Toei and Sensation Animations, digimon have no
gender. Unofficially from the script writers of digimon, 'bullshit.'
All Seasons -
Presence of specifically female traits on only certain digimon.
Particularly that some digimon have breasts. Breasts are the development
for both feeding offspring and attracting mates, which a digimon would
have no use for if they are truly without gender.
That digimon refer to them in male and female gender specific terms
when gender neutral terms are available, even digimon who have not made
human contact. That certain gender specific terms like mother, father,
son, daughter exist in their vocabulary.
Adventures -
Palmon being upset at Gomamon for being on the girl's side of the bath.
Hawkmon has been stated as being the opposite gender of Miyako (Yolie).
Revolmon (Deputymon) stripping naked and shocking Sora and Miyako, but
not Iori or Daisuke.
Tamers -
That Jijimon and Babamon are stated as being married. Marriage is a
concept of the creation of a family. If there is no reproduction between
digimon, there is no way for such a concept of marriage to exist.
That it was decided that Juri (Jeri) would receive a male digimon
partner.
Frontiers -
Grottomon held the Numemon women captive to force the Numemon men to
work for him.
Gender Changes in Tamers - Certain digimon changed genders when being
dubbed. Lopmon is male in Japanese version, female in majority of dubs.
Renamon was made male in German version, while Terriermon became female.

Japanese Laws and Society:

Bath House:
A business that is still popular in Japan today is their public baths.
Before reliable plumbing came to Japan, the only way for people to bath
was at these bath houses. Today these bath houses serve for group
outings and help people relax and be more open while bathing. Bath
houses often boast special mineral water for their baths to attract
customers. Natural hot springs are often turned into resorts and
especially try to advertise special qualities of their water.

Birth Control:
Condoms are by far the most common type of birth control.
Birth Control pills have been legal to use in Japan since the 1990s;
however, if a girl is known to be on the pills she is viewed to be a
slut and is treated poorly.
The 'morning after' pill, RU486, has not been approved for use in
Japan. Most other forms of contraception available in America and Europe
are available in Japan.
Abortion is not only legal, it is treated as a form of birth control.
The adult abortion rate is 1 in 3 pregnancies, and the teenage rate
would be at least twice that. There is a Shinto ritual to appease the
spirit of the unborn child that was aborted.

Burakumin / Eta:
Someone descendant to a cast of people who performed 'unclean' jobs
during the Tokugawa Period of Japan (1603-1868), like animal slaughter
or disposal of dead. This 'unclean' cast of Japanese is viewed extremely
poorly in Japan and can't hold any real job and people will avoid
associating with someone they know is Burakumin. Even a non-traditional
Japanese person would be sick at the thought of shaking the hand of a
Burakumin, let alone anything more.

Crime:
While Japan boasts one of the lowest recorded crime rates in the world,
their real crime rate is actually much higher as a greater percentage of
criminal acts fail to get processed through the judicial system.
When a person is arrested they have to be informed of the crime they
are being arrested for. And when going to trial it's the person's
responsibility to prove their innocence to three judges.
Crimes committed by a minor are rarely sent to trail. Rather if the
police catch a minor breaking the law, they are much more likely to
inform the minor's parents and school than make an arrest. Only if the
minor commits an 'adult' crime, like murder or rape, will the police
become directly involved and make an arrest.
Date rape is rarely prosecuted for various reasons. First, victims of
this crime are unlikely to report it regardless of which country they're
from, but this is especially true of Japanese as being raped has the
additional stigma of bringing shame to the family. Even when a victim
confides to being raped to their family, the response is typically 'the
person didn't mean to force sex.' Second, if the rapist says it was
consensual and there's no evidence of sex being forced beyond the
victim's word, the police are likely to view the report of rape as a
'lovers spat' and not do anything about it. This is mostly because
processing the rape report would increase the recorded crime rate.
Legally, rape can only be committed against females, those under the
age of thirteen, or a person that is unconscious or is unable to resist.
In other words, it is not a crime to rape a man as long as he has some
ability to resist.
A crime committed against a foreigner is unlikely to result in an
arrest, and even rarer a conviction. Any excuse to place the foreigner
to blame will be used. One case a man from the United States got into an
argument with a group of Japanese man and called one of them 'baka,'
meaning 'jerk,' and was then beaten to the point of being hospitalized.
When the trial came against the Japanese men, the case was thrown out
because, quoting one of the judges, 'the American should've known better
than to say, baka.'
A crime believed to be done by a foreigner will have him jailed, beaten
and/or deported. This is especially true for visiting Chinese and
Koreans. It is not unheard of for the police to hold a foreigner in jail
until their visitor's visa, their legal right to stay in the country,
runs out to force deportation. Often any property seized by police is
not returned to the foreigner even if he was never convicted.
Japanese jails would be considered inhumane by United States standards.
Some cells are barely big enough to sit down in let alone lie down. And
the guards beating prisoners is not an uncommon occurrence.
A crime that is committed by a large corporation is nearly impossible
for a Japanese police officer to bring to justice. The company can not
be made to produce any documentation to indicate who was responsible for
the criminal acts, and police officials are unlikely to force them to do
so.

Drugs:
Marijuana, cocaine, LSD, crystal meth, and any other sort of illegal
drugs are available in Japan. The country has seen an explosion in drug
use for various reasons. From the refusal of people to acknowledge their
country has the problem which results in very little drug awareness to
the fact that drug users are mostly minors and the police rarely do more
than inform the minor's school and parents about them using drugs.

Geisha:
A Japanese woman who is trained to be a man's fantasy companion,
through music and/or conversation.
Traditionally, a geisha was a slave. Training to be the fantasy
companion was very expensive as to play the role perfectly the girl must
be well versed in many different fields. The girl was indebted to her
sponsor who had her trained and housed her. The sponsor controlled every
aspect of the girl's life, including placing her virginity on auction
around the age of twelve to fourteen. The girl was not allowed to engage
in sexual activity unless the sponsor had been paid. Paying back the
sponsor was often beyond the reach of the girl, and only becomes 'free'
when a wealthy business man or noble pays off her debt and makes her his
mistress. Traditional Geisha girls still exist in Japan, but they are
very rare and their services are often limited to Japanese nobility and
rich Japanese businessmen.
Modern day geisha are nothing like their traditional counterpart. They
still try to perform as the perfect companion, but having sex with a
client is not considered part of the job. If she does have sex with a
customer it could get her fired. These geisha work as a man's companion
as if it's a job, where as a traditional geisha did it as a way of life.
They are not heavily trained to perform their role and employment is
temporary. Despite sex no longer being considered part of a Geisha's
work, they are still viewed as high class prostitutes by many Japanese.

Greatest Expression of Love:
'The greatest expression of love is between master and servant.'
Particularly a Shogun and one of his soldiers, and always between men.
Homosexual sex between men wasn't just accepted in Japan's past, it was
considered normal. Often times a Japanese noble would use a prepubescent
boy to relieve his sexual needs so as not to become 'dirty' by being
with a woman. This is NOT an accepted practice today, but still
influences the culture. This is why most yaoi relationships are depicted
as having a dominant male and a submissive one, where one of them is
always on the receiving end of anal sex.

Homosexuality:
Not nearly as socially accepted as Japanese entertainment would lead
you to believe. It is more often ignore that homosexuals exist. If
someone is in a gay relationship, often their family ignores the
relationship exists beyond friendship. Sometimes a homosexual is not
only disowned from their family, but the parents refuse to acknowledge
ever having that child.
Parents of a homosexual, especially a lesbian, often try to make an
arranged marriage for their child to make them straight, but few ever
result in a wedding.
Homosexuals are granted rights by law, but may not enter the military.

Honor:
All Japanese have a duty to their family and country. Their duty
creates a complex honor system that is so engrained into everyday life
that honor does not need to be talked about. In fact, it is very rare
that you'd find any Japanese person mention the word 'honor.' It is not
spoken about, it is lived.
The honor system is very complex and the lack of explanation of what
their honor is makes it difficult to list what is honorable and what is
not. The basics of their honor are loyalty and obedience to the family
and country. If your mother requested you to commit ritual suicide, it
is expected that you will kill yourself.

Ignoring What I Dislike:
A cultural habit of Japan is to tune out things they dislike, like
homosexuality, prejudice and drugs. If they hate it, it 'doesn't exist.'
For the most part this doesn't cause problems, however when forced to
confront something they dislike violence often ensues.

Legal Ages:
Eighteen is the youngest age someone can acquire a driver's license.
Alcohol and tobacco can be legally be purchased by twenty-year-olds,
but many stores and restaurants rarely follow that law as beer and
cigarettes are easily available from vending machines.

Love Motel:
A rather common business in Japan is serving to provide a place where
people can meet in private to engage in sexual activity. There are
various types of love motels from the traditional plain room with a bed
and shower, to hotels with each room geared towards whatever sexual
preferences someone might have, or even a parking garage that closes
around individual cars for people to privately have sex in their own
car. The main reason for love motels in Japan is the cheap nature many
of the home and even apartment complexes have been built, so for even a
married couple to make love in private without others overhearing they
have to go to a love motel.

Public Displays of Affection:
The highest demonstration of having a relationship in Japan is holding
hands or the guy placing his arm around the girl. Kissing, hugging and
especially fondling are deemed to be vulgar and considered rude.

Religion:
Shinto - The belief of a spiritual world and beings. Very polytheistic
with no single ruling god, but some gods are very powerful. The religion
deals heavily with appeasing spirits, particularly those of the dead.
Buddhism - A religion based on philosophy of a person's spiritual
growth towards perfection. Reincarnation after death is a fundamental
aspect of the religion.
Christianity - A small religious cult in Japan practiced by eight to
fourteen percent of Japanese depending on where they live. Many Japanese
Christians also follow Shinto or Buddhism to some degree.

Removing a Mother's Love:
A strict punishment that is given when a child has done something
especially wrong. When a mother tells her child 'I don't love you
anymore,' she is invoking this punishment. While being 'unloved,' the
child will not be included in family outings and is not allowed to do
anything. Sometimes the child will not even be fed.
The child must atone before to be 'loved' again. What the child has to
do varies, but it is usually related with what the child did wrong. This
punishment causes a child, especially boys, to side with their mother
over all things. Even after growing up and getting married, a man will
side with his mother over his own wife even if he agrees with his
spouse.

School:
Most Japanese schools are broken up into elementary (kindergarten to
sixth), junior high (seventh grade to ninth), and senior high (tenth to
twelfth).
School starts in April and lasts until March.
School week consists of Monday through Friday and a half day of school
on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month.
Main school breaks are: First week of May (called Golden Week), end of
July until end of August (summer break), last week of December into
mid-January (winter break), mid-March into April (end of year break /
spring break).
Cram schools are commonly used by students to improve their chances to
pass the entrance exams of good high schools and colleges.
Cleaning the classrooms is the job of the students after school, not a
janitor. During elementary school, the whole class usually cleans the
room at the end of day. In the high schools, cleaning responsibilities
are often rotated between the students during the school year.

Seppuku:
Ritual suicide where one atones his tarnished honor by cutting open his
own stomach. Usually having a second to aid in the death by beheading
the person going through the ritual.
Someone committing the full ritual of Seppuku would not eat for
twenty-four hours and meditate during that time about why he should die
while wearing ceremonial clothes.

Sex Laws:
Constitutionally, the age of consent is set at thirteen. Local laws
vary in terms of what consent is. Some areas in Japan have laws
regarding that a minor can not consent to be with foreigner.
There are laws prohibiting sex with a minor under the age of eighteen,
but can only be prosecuted if the minor or the minor's guardian presses
charges. In other words, if the teen consents and the parents don't
object, it's legal.
Child pornography is any picture or video taken of someone under the
age of eighteen in a provocative manner. Drawn images or pictures taken
of a nude minor not posed sexually nor genitalia shown are not subject
to child pornography laws. Possession of child pornography is actually
legal, while the creation, distribution for sale, exporting, importing,
and displaying of such material is against the law.
Prostitution is legal for those over the age of eighteen. Soliciting
sex from a minor is illegal. Brothels need to purchase a license to
legally operate.
Marriage license may be obtained by sixteen-year-old girls or eighteen
for guys without the consent of parents. Marriage license may be
obtained at a younger age with parental consent.
The above sex laws were all put into place in April of 1999. Before
then, child pornography, child prostitution, and sex with a minor were
not illegal.
An arranged marriage, without the consent of the two getting married,
requires approval from both families involved, two years notice and a
hundred thousand yen fee. Certain Japanese officials can wave
requirements for marriage. Note, arranged marriages are rare and usually
only occur between rich noble families or between martial arts families.

Taking Clan Name Upon Marriage:
It is not always clear whether the woman or the man getting married
will take the other's family name. Usually it is the woman who takes the
man's name. However, if the woman brings more to the wedding with her
dowry, has a higher noble status, has no brothers, and/or is from a much
smaller clan-- the man may end up taking the woman's name.
A man who takes the woman's name is seen to be unmanly. The man is
usually required to be adopted into the clan six months prior to the
wedding so he may be trained in his new family's customs.

Teenage Pregnancy:
An unwed mother is viewed with disdain. A teenage pregnant girl should
not exist. Many teen pregnancies end in abortion without the girl's
parents or the father of the aborted fetus knowing. If the parents learn
their daughter is pregnant and immediate marriage is not an option, they
will typically shut her in her room and ignore she was ever born. They
won't acknowledge her again until the girl goes to have an abortion, is
sent to live locked inside a relative's house until she gives birth at
which point the relatives adopt the baby and send the girl home, or the
family moves to another part of Japan and claim the baby's father is
dead.

Western Holidays:
Valentine's Day, February 14th, is celebrated in Japan by girls giving
boys they like chocolate. While in most cases a girl gives obligation
chocolate to all the boys they know which are store bought, however love
chocolate is also given which is typically either expensive or handmade
by the girl. In March, it's the boys turn to give chocolates to the
girl, but that day is not nearly as celebrated and boys mostly only give
chocolate to their girlfriend.
Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Grandparent's Day are celebrated.
Halloween is rarely observed. The times something is done, it's usually
limited to costume parties. Going out to 'Trick or Treat' is not done by
anyone of any age.
Christmas is a commercial holiday that focuses on exchanging gifts out
of love and friendship. It holds no real spiritual or religious meaning
for most Japanese. It is not nationally observed, and is still a school
day if it doesn't fall on a weekend.
Easter is not publicly observed at all.

Virginity:
A young woman planning to marry a noble or someone who is rich is
expected to remain a virgin until the wedding night. This is especially
true if her family arranges the girl's future husband.
A man who is in his late twenties or older and is still a virgin is
viewed as being unmanly and is undesirable to women.
A woman who is in her late twenties or older and is still a virgin is
viewed as being excessively prudish. Someone of that age getting married
is expected to have had intercourse before.

Yakuza:
Organized crime and the Japanese equivalent to the Mafia. Where the
Mafia focuses on acting as a family, the Yakuza term themselves as being
a business. Honor is very important, and causing dishonor is often
fatal.
The police turn a blind eye to most Yakuza criminal acts for various
reasons. Mostly because the Yakuza are very powerful and cause the
police an insane amount of trouble if they wanted to. The Yakuza is
known to help police as well, in one case by dumping the corpse of a
child rapist at the door of a police station.

Honorifics:
Honorifics for teenage Japanese, normal honorific use are as follows:
[in order of perceived closeness]

-san : stranger or someone you know, but are not very close to.
-sempai : upperclassman, someone guiding you at work, tutor
-sensei : Learned person. [teacher, doctor, manga author]
male family name without honorific : classmate, acquaintance, or someone
disliked.
classroom nickname: High school students are often given a nickname by
their classmates.
-kun : usually to someone younger, but can be used for friends.
-sama : someone you worship. [usually submissive girls to boyfriend.]
-dono : someone you highly respect, but don't worship. Rough meaning--
sire, sir, or lord. [-dono is almost never used.]
-chan girl to girl : usually close friends but can be used for the
girl's female lover.
-chan guy to guy : normally childhood friends that never changed the
-chan, or his male lover.
-chan guy to girl : You're cute, treats her like a younger sister, or is
his younger sister.
-chan girl to guy : I like you a lot or little brother.
-shorten name with chan : same as above but either closer, were
childhood friends, or for girl to guy when the girl is rather perky.
personal name without honorific : VERY close and familiar, used mostly
for family. Or to show contempt or disrespect.

Using family name is more respectful and shows less closeness to the
person than using their personal name.

Using an honorific that is not your due is considered rude. Particularly
when using -chan or no honorific for someone to show contempt.

Honorific use is NOT consistent between teenagers. An excessively polite
teen may only use someone's name and san while someone who is not
concerned with being polite may not use them at all. A meaning derived
from honorific usage can only be implied after understanding how the
person generally uses them for everyone he or she knows.
